Box-Like Modern Trojan Horse: Casa Troyana by Jackson Clements Burrows

Casa Troyana is an unusual residential building where two world meet – the front part of the house is a revamped Edwardian construction, while the back part was designed as a box-like structure cantilevering over the green backyard. Designed by Jackson Clements Burrows , the residence is located in Hawthorne, Melbourne, Australia. This is home to a young couple with three children under the age of 10. The family needed an extension to shelter their growing family and they chose to have a modern addition to the old house. The front part of the house contains a bedroom and a children’s room, while the backside was designed to gather all the entertaining spaces on the ground floor, leaving space for the private quarters on the top floor. A corridor and a thermal chimney ventilates the living spaces during summer and the operable wooded shutters upstairs regulates the temperature and light amount that reaches the bedrooms. Displaying features that remind us of the Trojan Horse, the residence protects the inhabitant’s privacy while allowing them to control the environment.
