Surprising and Dynamic Transformation of a Victorian Residence

Some time ago, we featured a beautiful house here on Freshome , where we saw how good Andrew Maynard Architects are. Today we showcase a very interesting modern home from their portfolio that has been transformed from a double-fronted Victorian house into an exciting contemporary mixture of modern design and vintage charm. You can clearly see every detail, from every corner. The extended part in the rear garden is the celebrated part of the house, contrary to the idea that the design was built to accentuate the old building. Those who have seen the interior and the backyard know that the residence is indeed a continuation of space into an open, breathing space. Architects talk about the transformation :” the house is now articulated as three masses – the original dwelling, addition and garage, each punctuated by outside space. A blurred line exists not between old and new, but inside and out “.

Eco-friendly features complete the residence’s charm: the Victorian part was completely re-floored using recycled spotted gum. In the back of the house, a concrete slab absorbs heat during the day and spreads it during the night, so the result is a constant temperature. Double glazing and quality insulation keep the home at optimum temperature. The kitchen is the central point of the house. Both residents are caterers and the bright kitchen is spiced with lime green. Even the undulating lines of the complementing addition to the Victorian dwelling reflect feminine accents enjoyed by the three ladies of the house. The renovation was meant to display a transition between old and new. Do you think the architects managed to reflect that?
